Battle Brewing Over Wal-Mart

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, December 2, 2008

"In a new online video, Gens. Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee appear together, able to finally agree on one thing: Wal-Mart’s plan to build a Supercenter on a portion of the Wilderness battlefield is preposterous. The re-enactors’ point is also driven home in a mass mailer sent by another group last week to 16,000 Orange County households."

FoWB: Wal-mart Okay, Just Not There!

Orange County Review, November 26, 2008

"One local group says a Wal-Mart in Orange County is alright, but the planned location for the big-box store is all wrong. The 140,000-square foot retail store, as planned, will take up 19 acres of a 50-acre parcel on the north side of Route 3, and is already zoned for commercial use. But the recent adoption of a large retail use ordinance into Orange County’s code means any retail establishment in excess of 60,000 square feet must submit a special use permit, and go through the public hearing process. "

Innkeepers In Orange Partner With Montpelier

Orange County Review, November 10, 2008

"“Elizabeth always wanted to open a B&B, and I always wanted to renovate old houses,” Billie said. “With its proximity to Montpelier, it seemed like a natural fit.” In light of Montpelier’s recent $24 million restoration, other innkeepers in the area also view it as a natural fit. Billie and Goeke have banded with the owners of seven other nearby inns to form the Inns at Montpelier, a partnership formed in recent years that allows them to pool marketing resources, compete in a cooperative and efficient manner, and attract visitors to this lush slice of Virginia. Orange Restricts Subdivisions

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, October 30, 2008

"...Just as they had previously announced, Supervisors Teri Pace, Zack Burkett and Lee Frame voted for the ordinance that would restrict property division to once in four years, would leave lots under 50 acres indivisible and require roads to be built to state specifications if they serve at least three lots."

PEC supported the changes to the ordinance which will help protect Orange Countys rural land. We encourage citizens who support the new ordinance to thank the Supervisors who voted for it. Find their email addresses in this PEC email alert.

Tourism On The Upswing

Orange County Review, October 16, 2008

"The cloud of angst surrounding the floundering economy has a silver lining, it seems, when it comes to tourism in Orange County. Big city folks from further north near Washington D.C. are forgoing far-off getaways in favor of nearer destinations-like Orange. These travelers are taking what Orange County Director of Tourism Joe Ward calls “a trip on a tank.” "

Wal-mart Officials Meet In Orange

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, October 23, 2008

"Lake of the Woods residents--and a generous handful of invited guests--welcomed Wal-Mart officials to a Civic Club meeting at the gated Orange County subdivision Tuesday night."

This article downplays citizens concerns about a major commercial development at the edge of Wilderness Battlefield, which is Orange Countys biggest tourist attraction. Take action to prevent a Walmart at Wilderness Battlefield.

Battle Brewing Over Civil War Battlefield

NBC 29, October 3, 2008

"A battle is brewing in Orange County over a civil war battlefield. The players are Wal-Mart, county leaders, and people who want to protect the Wilderness Battlefield National Park."

Public Speaks On Orange Comp Plan

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, October 4, 2008

" Residents had their say this week on the latest version of Orange County’s comprehensive plan, but planning commissioners didn’t vote on the changes. While all speakers at Thursday night’s public hearing applauded adding the word "rural" to the plan’s mission statement, reaction to the rest of the proposed amendments was mixed."
