Who Accepts Conservation Easements?
In Virginia, easements can be donated to a number of public and private entities. The majority of conservation easements are donated to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF), a state agency established by the Virginia General Assembly to hold easements in public trust. Depending on the location and conservation values associated with your property, there are other organizations which might also be effective easement holders. For instance, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the National Park Service also accept easements. Additionally, easements can be held by certain qualified non-profit conservation organizations, such as PEC and the Nature Conservancy.
To help determine the best easement holder for your special property, please contact PEC's conservation staff (email
or call Maggi MacQuilliam at 540.347.2334 ext. 29).
